Reframe Spotlight: ‘Kandahar’

Director Mohsen Makhmalbaf mixes non-fiction and fiction to tell this powerful story of a female journalist who fled Afghanistan as a teenager and now must return to the war-torn country to rescue her sister, who will commit suicide at the time of the next solar eclipse, which is only three days away.

Kandahar was mostly shot in Iran, though Makhmalbaf did secretly shoot a few scenes in Afghanistan at the peak of the Taliban's rule.
