For our first podcast from the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival we chat with documentary filmmaker Marshall Curry about his latest film Point and Shoot (Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund alum), which is having its world premiere at the festival.
The film looks at the life-changing journey of Matthew VanDyke, a young Baltimore native, who went out on a "crash course in manhood" on his motorcycle (recording everything with a camera) through the Middle East and ended up in Libya to join the rebels who were taking up arms against Gaddafi. While there, he was captured and spent five and a half months in solitary confinement before escaping and returning to the front lines.
Curry talks about how he crafted the hours of VanDyke's footage into a stirring recount of his experience, and why the film may leave you with more questions than answers.
