Daydream and Tribeca Film Institute Immersive Films Program | VR Lab

** CLOSED **

Tribeca Film Institute’s Interactive Programs partners with Google’s Daydream team to bring you the Immersive Films Program: a program to support creators who want to further explore the medium of virtual reality. We are co-hosting a VR Lab and inviting teams to submit projects/ideas under the theme ‘5 Elements of Nature.’ From ancient civilizations and outer space, to our bodies and daily consumption, we want you to activate your senses and use the 5 marvelous elements of nature (EARTH, WATER, WIND, FIRE, SPACE) to explore futurism, politics, reality, fiction, or any topic you are passionate about. We want to be surprised, and we want to see new ways VR technology can be leveraged to expand our understanding of the world.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for pieces that excavate the different facets of nature through journeys into various cultures, mythologies, fables, and wonders. We are especially excited about pieces that push the boundaries of the medium, and create stories that fit the spatial possibilities of VR. We are looking for change, for new and different perspectives on the world. We are looking for movement, for elevation, for out of this world feelings.

Who should apply?

We are looking for strong teams made up of various talents, and creators whose voices are underrepresented in the media and the VR space — both emerging and seasoned. Applications will be selected based on the strength of the team, the originality of the idea, and the feasibility of the project given the budget and time period.

5 teams/projects will be selected to attend a VR Lab in New York City end of July. Each team will receive $40,000, a Yi Halo camera as well as free unlimited stitching via Jump, and Google technical support. We will kick start the process with a foundational lab and then send off each team on their adventure.

Award: $40,000, Yi Halo camera for the duration of the production, Jump stitching, two-day lab & technical support
Announcing winners: July 2018
Two-day Lab: August 2-3, 2018
Production deadline: September/October 2018
Post-production deadline: November/December 2018

1: Can I submit an application without a team?
We encourage all creators to submit in teams. The production of VR films requires many talents from producers, directors, writers, actors, DPs, sound supervisors and more. We want to ensure that you are able to achieve your project vision.

2: Do we have to be located in the U.S.?
Considering the budget and timelines, we encourage U.S. based creators to submit. Alternately, you can also submit if the majority of the team is based in the U.S.

3: Can teams submit multiple proposals?
We encourage teams to submit one proposal. Some collaborators on projects can be listed on multiple applications, however, we encourage core teams to submit one proposal.

4: Are we bound to film in the U.S.?
You can take the equipment abroad but you will need to file for a carnet and be 100% responsible for it.

5: How many members per team?
There is no limit to the number of team members, however, for the VR Lab only 3-5 members will be able to attend.

6: Distribution and festivals: Are we bound to exhibit at Tribeca Film Festival?
There is no obligation to premier the piece at any particular festival. We will encourage all pieces to submit to top tier festivals. Their selection will be based on merit at Tribeca Film Festival or otherwise.

7: Can I miss the lab or any check in sessions?
Because of the significant financial commitment provided to each creator, we ask that selected participants commit to attending all programming. Exceptions can be made for illnesses or other emergencies.

8: Do you cover travel expenses to and from the lab?
The program covers everyone’s travel expenses within the U.S. to attend the lab. Travel expenses for the project should be covered by the provided production grants.

9: Can I provide or secure additional funds for my project in the Lab?
Yes, you can secure additional funds for this project. Any additional funder/partners of the project must be approved by the executive producers: Tribeca Film Institute and Google.
