Born in Pakistan, Afia Nathaniel studied at the Kinnaird College for Women and the Lahore University of Management before moving to New York to work on her M.F.A. in film production at Columbia University. In 2002 she wrote the short film Butterfly, which received Honorable Mention at the Black Maria Film Festival, won best student film at the Ivy Film Festival, and won the Audience Choice Award at the Asia-Expo Lyon Film Festival, among other honors. Nathanial directed the short Nadah, wrote and directed the short Toba Tek Singh, and co-wrote the feature Chasing Windmills. Her next project will be the narrative short Long After the Marigolds Die, which will star two of India's finest actors, Naseerudin Shah and Jaya Bachchan.
