Gemma Atwal, for the last five years has worked as a freelance director, producer and development producer on a variety of feature documentary, factual and observational documentaries. Atwal spent time working as a self-shooting director on extreme sport and youth lifestyle brand spots. She is a former partner of OneWorld, a Madrid-based production house creating global business content solutions for CNBC television. The focus was on emerging economies in Africa, the Middle East and South America.
Prior to documentary work, Atwal spent two and a half years working as a journalist in Africa, South-East Asia and Europe. She gained experience in radio broadcasting, initially training through the BBC and a 12-month placement with Radio Canada, and later working for Nigerian State Radio as an on-air reporter. In June 2006, Gemma Atwal received a First Class MSC in International Human Rights Law. In June 1997, she received a Double First Class Honours degree in French Literature and International Politics, alongside a scholarship for PhD study at McGill University, Montreal.
