Director/ Screenwriter
JJ Goldberger is a graduate of the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. Before attending AFI, JJ attended Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied dance and choreography and spent twelve years in New York as a professional dancer and choreographer. As an AFI graduate student, JJ made eight short films, and her thesis script won AFI's Martin Ritt Award, a $10,000 production grant. She was also the only African American recipient of AFI’s 2003 Women in Film Scholarship. JJ's independent short film, Stone Mansion, was one of Showtime’s 2004 Black Filmmakers Short Film Showcase winners and was licensed to the network, airing in February 2004 in honor of Black History Month. JJ's AFI thesis film was also sold in 2004 to HBO and is currently in rotation. Stone Mansion was sold to American Public Television (PBS) in 2005 and is currently airing in 45 US markets. Both films have screened in over fifty national and international festivals. JJ is a recent recipient of a Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media Grant to develop a feature-length documentary on a landmark racial discrimination case. She is also currently part of the production staff of Damon Wayons’ new Showtime comedy sketch series, “The Underground.” She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Joe, a master drummer and film music composer.
Screenwriter
An Inglewood, CA native, Stacy Pyles is an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker. Her romantic comedy screenplay, Sunset Cove, took top honors at the 2005 African-American Film Marketplace and has recently been optioned for development. An alumna of prestigious writing fellowships such as the Warner Bros. Comedy Writing Workshop, and Dr. Bill Cosby’s Screenwriting Program, Stacy also holds an M.F.A. in Film from California College of the Arts, where she wrote and developed several narrative screenplays. Her thesis film Combing Thru the Kinks (a comedic look at Black women and their hair) premiered at the San Francisco Art Commission Gallery and went on to garner numerous honors, awards, and special screenings. Currently, Combing Thru the Kinks is being used as an academic tool at several top Universities and Colleges across the country in Women’s Studies, Ethnic Studies and African-American Studies departments. Stacy completed her undergraduate coursework in Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley.
Producer
Beverley holds a B.A. in Middle Eastern History from Harvard University. After graduating, Beverley received a fellowship to the American University in Cairo, Egypt, where she studied Arabic and worked in the Special Collections division of the University library. She later received her J.D. from Tulane Law School in entertainment and sports law. Beverley has worked at several New York law firms; assisted the director of development at Revelations Entertainment; and produced the independent feature films Chutney Popcorn (2000) starring Jill Hennessy, and The Other Brother (2002), starring Mekhi Phifer. Beverley is a 2004 MFA graduate of the American Film Institute, where she produced four short films, and in 2003 was the recipient of a prestigious $10,000 AFI Scholarship. Beverley’s thesis film, Wednesday Afternoon, (dir. Alonso F. Mayo), has appeared in over 20 national and international film festivals. It was the Gold Prize winner, Narrative Category at the 2005 Student Academy Awards and one of three nominees for the Best Short Film Award at the 2005 Imagen Awards. Wednesday Afternoon has also won several honors, including: McDonald’s Best Student Work Award, San Diego Latino Film Festival; Honorable Mention, Latino Category at the 2004 DGA Student Film Awards; Jury Prize Winner, Best Short Film at the Boston Latino International Film Festival; Finalist of the Angelus Live Action Award at the Angelus Awards Student Film Festival; and Finalist, Best Short Film at the Deauville Festival of American Film (France). Wednesday Afternoon has aired on Showtime and SiTV (Dish Network) and will air in Scandinavia for Canal+ Nordic.
