To Kill A Mockingbirdby Robert Mulligan

Tuesday, January 25 at 11am

This season will kick off with this beloved film, based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel. To Kill a Mockingbird follows the story of Scout Finch, a six year old tomboy who lives with her father Atticus and older brother Jem in a racially-divided Alabama town during the Great Depression. When a white woman falsely accuses a black man of attacking her, the outcome of his trial is such a foregone conclusion that no lawyer will step forward to defend him, except Atticus. Portrayed by Gregory Peck in an Oscar®-winning performance, Atticus’s compassionate defense costs him many friendships, but earns him the admiration of his two children.

In this film based on the classic novel by H.G. Wells, a scientist (Rod Taylor) invents a time machine that allows him to explore the earth's distant future—a place of idyllic beauty that also harbors a sinister evil. This sci-fi classic won an Oscar® for its ground-breaking (and trippy!) special effects that were hands-down ahead of their time.

William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Julietby Baz Luhrmann

In director Baz Luhrmann's contemporary take on William Shakespeare's classic tragedy, the Montagues and Capulets have moved their ongoing feud to the sweltering suburb of Verona Beach, where Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Juliet (Claire Danes) fall in love and secretly wed. The original dialogue coupled with a distinctly modern visual style results in a truly unique adaptation.
