'Solar Mama' Wins DOC NYC Audience Award

New York's prominent documentary festival, DOC NYC, announced the 2012 award winners last night and Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund grantee Rafea: Solar Mama won the SundanceNOW Audience Award.

Jehane Noujaim and Mona Eldaief's doc follows three women who leave their remote villages to go on a life-changing journey to India with the hopes of becoming solar engineers. When they return to their villages, they will wire their communities and turn on the lights.

Solar Mama premiered at this year's Toronto International Film Festival's Docs Conference in September and is featured as part of PBS' Independent Lens series.
