Ilhan Omar, a young, hijab-wearing, Somali refugee mother of three, takes on two formidable opponents in a highly contested race for a seat in the Minnesota State Legislature. If successful, she will become the first Muslim Somali woman lawmaker in the United States. An intimate, behind-the-scenes view into the life of one of America’s brightest rising political stars.

Norah Shapiro

Norah Shapiro is a Minneapolis-based filmmaker who left a decade-long career as a public defender to pursue documentary filmmaking, and hasn’t looked back since. Her first feature film MISS TIBET: BEAUTY IN EXILE (2014) premiered at the DOC NYC Film Festival. The film received the “Best Minnesota Made Feature Documentary” at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Film Festival, and screened at SF DOCFEST, Asian American International Film Festival and others around the globe. Norah is also currently producing a new documentary about the recently solved case of Jacob Wetterling, a young Minnesota boy who was abducted 27 years ago.

Jennifer Steinman is an award-winning Director, Producer and Editor. Her most recent feature, DESERT RUNNER, screened to sold-out audiences at IDFA and was named one of "The Top 10 Documentaries of 2013" by the Huffington Post. It won “Best of the Fest” at Edinburgh, Audience Awards at Vancouver and The Hamptons International Film Festivals, and screened worldwide in over 20 countries. Jennifer's feature directorial debut, MOTHERLAND, had its world premiere and won an Audience Award at SXSW in 2009. In addition to producing TIME FOR ILHAN, she is currently directing a feature about the life of legendary percussionist, SHEILA E.
